Southborough & District 10

In the News

This article was published in the Croyden Advertiser.
A CYCLING club founded in Thornton Heath will be riding home.Members of Thornton Road Club, which is now based in Kent, will cycle from Romney Marsh to Thornton Heath on May 17.The club was founded by Thornton Heath cyclists in 1946 and at its peak had 70 members from Croydon, Mitcham and Lambeth. As its membership dwindled in the 1970s and 1980s, the name was kept alive by members in Kent and Sussex who went on to attract new members.Member Richard Foster, 48, said: “None of our members are from that area now so we thought it would be nice to cycle from here and come home as it were.“Not many of us have actually been to Thornton Heath, although we bear that name.”He said the 70-mile route would be “a stroll in the park” for some of the riders.Thornton Heath residents who want to take part can call him on 01303 26422

Thornton Member gets Hitched

Graeme Pilcher, a keen member of the Club, finally made an honest woman of his long standing partner Viv, on Valentines day, February 14th.  Many Club members attended the marriage ceremony and evening celebration at the Gand Hotel, on the Leas in Folkestone. An excellent time was had by all, the Grand was an excellent venue and all the arrangements were really well thought through (except the phone call to Graeme's phone, during the marriage ceremony) and Viv - you looked extra special. Mr & Mrs Pilcher have not been seen for a few weeks, as they escaped to Madeira for their honeymoon. Best wishes for a long and happy future together, from Thornton Road Club. Following the usual Club run on Sunday 15th February, riders joined Graeme for the morning coffee in the salubrious surroundings of the Grand Hotel. Arm chairs, music by the resident pianist and coffee from a cup and saucer made this an unusual, but very agreeable meeting place.  No doubt we'll return here again for coffee, in the future. Has anyone any other ideas for novel meeting places? You can veiw a slideshow of some of their photos here Kent Wedding Photographer
