Michael & myself stopped overnight at Newbury & picked up our starting pack Saturday afternoon before stuffing ourselves ready for the next day. We also managed to watch the England game (well some of us did). Mr P was a bit too comfortable & kept nodding off.
The next morning was overcast but quite warm - ideal conditions. The venue at Newbury racecourse was excellent & there was a great atmosphere. Michael started off at about 8.15 with the big boys for the 127 miler and I followed later at 8.40 on the 81 mile course. There was also a 50 mile course available.
It was well signposted, marshalled & the feed stations were good. It wasn't as a demanding course as the King of the Downs as it was more of a rolling route.
It warmed up considerably by mid-day & I rode for a while with a pleasant lady from New Zealand who is married to an Englishman (also doing the 127 miler).
I came across the finishing mat which was under a fancy arch & was presented with a medal by some young army cadets who informed me that massages where available (very tempting). I headed back to the car to to wait for Mr P & sure enough at the guesstimated time he appeared - not looking too desperate. We compared experiences & agreed that it had been a lovely ride. We grabbed a bite to eat & headed home - all in all a successful weekend!
