Thornton's Mersey Roads 24 Hour 2013

Last weekend John, Russ, Trevor and myself along with Gerry, Rachelle and Steve ( Thorntons new King of the 10's, 23.14 on Tuesday, wow.) in support travelled up to Shropshire for the 24 hr.

This years event again included the RTTC National Championship. Run on the same course as last year, starting at Farndon and heading south to Prees Heath which was the hub of the two circuits, before heading back to Farndon for the finishing circuit.

The heatwave forecast didn't quite materialise, although it was warm and muggy well into the night, a couple of showers soon cooled things down a bit then a heavier shower at 6 o'clock before warming up again untill the finish. A nagging easterly wind was ever present throughout the 24 hours.

Trevor making his debut coped very well, he even cycled a bit more after his finish time to round up the figures on his computer. John made it to the finishing circuit but stopped before his time was up due to a very painful knee.

Russ at 64 years old was the star for us, producing a 24 hr PB and finishing 2nd in his age category (60/64) a mere 3 miles behind 1st place.
Our distances, Russ 339.59, John 340.055, Trevor 343.587 and me 375.232.

The event was won by Stuart Birnie, Willesden CC with 518.372, beating last years champion Ultan Coyle Rapha Condor CC by 5 miles.

A strong field had 31 riders beating the 400 mark. Next years RTTC National Championship is down in East Sussex so i suggest you start getting the miles in now lads.
